Subluxation & Its Functional Impact

While chiropractic encompasses hundreds of specialized techniques, they all share one vital goal: identifying and resolving subluxation. Subluxations are joint misalignments or restrictions that create nervous system interference. The nervous system is your body’s primary regulatory network. It governs all organs, tissues, and musculoskeletal structures in the body. When interference occurs, it often serves as the underlying catalyst for dysfunction, regardless of whether symptoms have appeared yet. By restoring optimal neural communication through spinal recalibration, chiropractors help to facilitate systemic healing. Modern chiropractic integrates a variety of approaches including structural, postural, and neuro-tonal. However, neuro-tonal care uses specific, low-force stimuli to reset the tone or baseline tension and readiness of your nervous system. Proper nervous system tone allows for more optimal functioning and performance.

Neuro-Tonal Chiropractic & The Autonomic Nervous System

Modern life—characterized by increasing toxic loads and chronic stress—often requires a precise, neurologically-focused approach for lasting stability and long-term health maintenance. Neuro-tonal adjusting modulates the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), which regulates heart rate, digestion, and blood pressure among other critical functions. The ANS consists of two primary branches that must remain in balance. The Sympathetic Nervous System is known as the "fight or flight" response and prepares the body for stressful or dangerous situations by increasing heart rate and redirecting energy resources. In contrast, the Parasympathetic Nervous System is often called the "rest and digest" system, as it promotes recovery, lowers heart rate, and supports vital functions like digestion. Because these nerves exit through the spinal column, subluxation can disrupt vital signals between the brain and internal organs. This interference can trigger dysautonomia (ANS dysfunction), shifting the body into a state of chronic sympathetic dominance that manifests as various symptoms such as fatigue, digestive issues, and poor immunity.

Primary vs Secondary Subluxations

The clinical focus of neuro-tonal chiropractic involves identifying and correcting primary subluxations. These are the initial sites of nervous system interference. When a primary subluxation occurs, the body naturally attempts to adapt to the resulting imbalance. This leads to secondary compensatory subluxations—biomechanical shifts where other joints misalign to "balance out" the original issue. In many clinical cases, a single primary subluxation can be associated with up to 10 secondary compensations. By prioritizing the resolution of these primary neural focal points, rather than just treating the symptomatic compensations, we stabilize the entire neuro-spinal system and prevent the cycle of recurring issues. Consider a patient suffering from chronic low back pain. While the pain is in the lower spine, the primary subluxation may actually be located upstream of the issue such as in the upper neck. To compensate for the misalignment in the neck, the body shifts the shoulders and hips, creating several secondary subluxations in the lower back to maintain balance. If a practitioner only adjusts the lower back (the secondary site), the pain may temporarily subside but will inevitably return because the primary trigger in the neck remains unaddressed.

Techniques Dr. Miriah Uses

In recognition of their reported benefits, Dr. Miriah primarily utilizes neuro-tonal protocols to address nervous system health, while leveraging her training in other techniques to provide truly individualized care for every patient.

Spinal Care: Torque Release Technique (TRT), Webster, and Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT), supplemented by gentle manual or drop-table adjustments.

Extremity & Soft Tissue: Activator Methods analysis protocols referenced for joints outside the spine, combined with instrument-assisted and/ or manual soft tissue work.

Torque Release Technique (TRT)

Torque Release Technique (TRT) is a sophisticated, tonal-based chiropractic model designed to optimize neurological function. The spinal envelope (dura mater) is securely anchored at various attachment points throughout the spinal canal, including the upper neck, sacrum, and others. These structural connections mean that any spinal misalignment (subluxation) can create mechanical tension within this envelope, directly influencing the overall tone and responsiveness of the nervous system. By reducing dural tension with specific adjustments, TRT facilitates the body’s innate ability to self-regulate and recover.

Torque Release Technique

Scientific Foundation & Clinical Research

Torque Release Technique (TRT) was established in the 1990s at the Holder Research Institute. It represents a significant evolution in chiropractic science, born from rigorous randomized clinical trials designed to evaluate the relationship between spinal health and neurological well-being. Central to the application of TRT is the Integrator, the first chiropractic adjusting instrument to receive FDA clearance for its specific mechanism of action. The research foundational to TRT initially explored the impact of neurological regulation on complex psychological and physiological challenges, including addiction, anxiety and stress-related disorders. The peer-reviewed data indicated that stabilizing the nervous system through these specific, low-force adjustments led to multiple reported benefits. These included significant reductions in patient-reported anxiety and stress-related symptoms, greater success in long-term patient adherence to treatment protocols, and a measurable decrease in the necessity for secondary medical interventions for stress-induced conditions. By focusing on the dural attachment points of the spine, TRT provides a precise, reproducible, and evidence-based method for optimizing human health and neurological performance.

Objective Neurological Analysis

Torque Release Technique (TRT) is a highly precise method that follows an established protocol using at least 15 indicators of subluxation to pinpoint exactly where your body needs an adjustment, even if you aren't feeling any symptoms yet. We perform an objective neurological analysis by checking your Functional Leg-Length Reflex (FLLR). While you lie in a relaxed, prone (face down) position, we elicit a natural reflex in your feet (Achilles reflex)—similar to a standard knee-jerk test—to observe how your nervous system responds to subtle changes in tension. During this process, we perform precise pressure tests by applying a light touch to various segments of your spine, pelvis, or neck. If your leg length balances perfectly in response to a specific point of pressure, it confirms that area as a primary subluxation where your nervous system is experiencing the greatest interference. This scientific approach is built upon a synergistic foundation of well-established, evidenced-based chiropractic disciplines, including Thompson Drop, Network Spinal and others.

The Integrator: Precision Technology

The Integrator was the first chiropractic adjusting instrument to receive FDA clearance for its specific mechanism of action. It delivers a three-dimensional impulse featuring torque and recoil at a velocity of 1/10,000th of a second. Its specific 64 Hz frequency is calibrated to normalize nerve function and reset irritated nerve endings. The instrument features a tip-sensitive automatic release. This ensures the impulse only fires upon reaching a precise counter-pressure, providing consistent clinical outcomes across different practitioners. This gentle, non-invasive method is generally appropriate for patients across the entire lifespan.

The Path to Neurological Stability

Torque Release Technique (TRT) focuses on retraining the nervous system through neuroplasticity. Similar to beginning physical exercise or learning a new skill, consistent repetitions are required initially to strengthen new neuromuscular pathways. Each adjustment serves as a "pattern interrupt," reinforcing healthy brain-body communication. More frequent visits are often recommended at the start of care to ensure cumulative healing and long-term stability. While many patients have reported feeling immediate clarity, relaxation and/or relief, some experience mild soreness or fatigue as the body adapts to its new alignment. In the long-term, patients commonly report improved sleep quality, increased stress resilience, decreased pain and enhanced autonomic regulation.

Webster Technique & Pregnancy

Webster Technique is a specialized chiropractic analysis and adjustment protocol designed to balance the pelvis and reduce tension in the surrounding ligaments and muscles. While widely known for its benefits during pregnancy, it is an essential tool for optimizing pelvic and neurological health for all weight-bearing patients

The primary goal of Webster Technique is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation and sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction. By restoring proper neuro-biomechanical function to the pelvis, the technique helps patients to achieve optimal pelvic alignment, global posture, ligamentous and muscular tone, and neurological function.  For expecting mothers, maintaining pelvic balance is crucial. By creating more space in the pelvis, the baby is better able to move into the optimal position for birth. Patients receiving Webster Technique often report shorter labor times and a more comfortable pregnancy journey.
